Salads and Bokashi

Other than some light rain showers on Saturday night not much has happened on the plot since our last post a week ago.  But with rain comes bigger healthier plants and of course the unrelenting - WEEDS!!!

The Elephant Garlic is starting to get a good foothold (thick stems), its taken approximately 6 weeks to get to this stage whereas the Lautrec (thinner wispy stems) took off in what seemed like hours after planting - I’m pretty sure I saw green after 5 days; quite an achievement!

The last picture shows the salad bed.  We’re growing (left to right) ball radishes, mixed salad leaves, Spring Onions, Celery, French breakfast radishes, Lambs lettuce (mostly for Freddy) and some perpetual Spinach (just coming through).  More will be added to this bed as the season progresses by replacing harvested rows. Both lettuces and radishes should be ready to harvest in a weeks time, their old rows will be planted with something else...

A horticultural friend and I have been discussing the Bokashi Composting method, which up to 5pm last night I hadn’t heard of before, although its certainly not a new concept (click on link for more info).  Have you used this method before? - Please send me your opinions and views or alternatives for composting diary and meat products..
