The Big Top

We didn’t post last week about the fruit cage and despite the ferocious wind we’ve been having here in North Yorkshire; it stayed upright all week, we even have the picture to prove it:

Its a little primitive at the moment but will be much improved for next year … as always finances permitting!

Unfortunately, all our Potato varieties are now up showing their leaves so we covered them over again until the frosts pass....roll on June.  We’re going to plant the last batch of Potatoes at the end of May (Charlotte, Pentland and Cara).  This is slightly later than in previous years but we’re interested to know a) whether they suffer with the late rains in July compared to the drought in April and b) whether it affects the later varieties I leave in the ground (cara) until as late in September (or later) as my kitchen will allow.

Our little pumpkin is growing and developing his true leaves, its been a bit windy recently so I though he would benefit from some straw around his toes! :-)

The last picture shows our weeks pickings - radishes, yes a little meagre and not quite enough for a plate each but we did enjoy a salad sandwich each nonetheless and next week hopefully the salad leaves will be large enough to pick too.
